Billie was a person we met in a memory enhancement center who demonstrates Marilyn’s thesis, that giving people with dementia the opportunity to create art can lead to surprising outcomes. Billie had painted most of her life, decorating china dishes and china dolls. It was her hobby and her great love. The room she occupied at the center held an armoire filled with the dishes and china dolls she had painted.

Even though she had so much experience painting, Billie was still hesitant to join the art class. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and dementia, and told us that she didn’t think she could hold a paint brush anymore because her hands shook so badly. Adhering to the Montessori principle of “invite, never insist,” we didn’t push Billie. She would often join the painting group as an observer, giving pointers to the people painting, and sometimes offering ideas for their creations.
