⤠Improved Pain
New imaging techniques have allowed researchers to watch how endorphins interact with the human brain and confirm that they increase after physical activity. These natural painkillers, which are like our own built-in opioids, help to heal and repair the body and can cause a state of euphoria referred to as a ârunnerâs high.â There are at least twenty kinds of endorphins, but until now they have been difficult to measure. They are produced by the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and spinal cord but the receptors they are attracted to are found throughout the brain. That means an overall feeling of euphoria or well-being.
A fast-paced game of tennis, several laps in the pool, sexual activity, a good belly laugh, or dancing can produce the same effect as running when it comes to endorphin release. Meditation, acupuncture, massage therapy, and even breathing deeply also increase your level of endorphins. For people with chronic pain, doing deep breathing exercises increases endorphin production and lowers pain perception.
