Table 10.Attributes I recommend confirming before purchasing EHR (Electronic Health Record):

EHR system should be a hosted ASP software system.

EHR should be a hybrid system permitting both document management features and database management templates.

Meets the criteria for “meaningful use” (this is an evolving definition, but current information may be found at www.federalregister.gov/inspection.aspx#special).“Meaningful use” implies that federal stimulus funds will be available to you to help offset the cost of EHR software investment. (See next table for partial definition of “meaningful use.”)

EHR integrates seamlessly with lab software and systems.

EHR enables personal health record building option and patient portal.

EHR integrates or includes practice management software.

EHR integrates and includes scheduling program.

EHR vendor is solid and reputable and been in business for more than five years.

EHR must be CCHIT certified. This means that the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) has certified the vendor and the product according to various standards.

EHR vendor must be willing and able to download your data to your own servers locally on a regular basis. You must always have access to the data in the event the vendor goes out of business.

EHR support always available.

EHR ease of use.

EHR integrates or supports dictations.

Ease of implementing the system in your practice.

Ease of customizing the system for your preferences.

Confirm that the system can be accessed from anywhere.

Confirm that the EHR has attributes particular to your specialty.

Confirm that the company has had over one hundred installs, at a minimum.

Confirm that the company has over one hundred physician users, at a minimum.

Confirm that the EHR company supports the product.

Confirm that the EHR vendor will help facilitate receiving federal stimulus incentives.

Confirm the total cost of the software system installed and working.

Confirm the monthly maintenance costs.

Define additional computer hardware needed to purchase.

Define additional local networking software needed to purchase.

Define how much local networking and hardware support you will need.

Define the additional third-party software the vendor requires you to purchase.

Define the annual and monthly costs and licensing fees for the third-party software.
