Chapter 31

“So, you have been right under my nose all this time. I’m sure, you feel like we are the dopes and you are the one with the superior intellect.”

Cullen felt like a fool. She had played him. She had toyed with him. And she had nearly gotten away with her little charade. But more than that, she had worked her way under his skin, and he had been frantic to protect her.

Yet, she had proven she did not need him after all. Her con was perfect.

Damn, he hated when he was right. He knew she had been Grace Fabrizio, and she had managed to throw him off the scent. She outwitted him and out maneuver him.

“I did what I had to do to survive. You would have done the same. Now, I ask again, what is your plan for me?” Grace asked as they stepped into Laurie’s office.

“I'm taking you into custody," Cullen said, not knowing why he felt the urge to detain her. Ten minutes earlier, he had the overwhelming urge to protect her from her father’s killer. Deep down, he knew Grace could not have committed the heinous crimes yet, he still felt the need to dominate her.

“But you said…” Laurie interrupted, grabbing at Grace to pull her behind her.

“You're under arrest for the murders of Phillip Scarlatti and Lucian Fabrizio. You have the right to remain silent.”

“You cannot arrest me! I did not do anything. It wasn’t me!” Grace was fighting the cuffs Cullen was placing on her.

“If you choose to speak, anything you say in this meeting or any other can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney then one will be appointed for you at no cost to you.”

“I was a victim, too. How could I have shot myself?” Grace said, trying to get free of his iron grip.

“There were four eyewitnesses who will testify you pulled the trigger. Stop fighting me before I add resisting to the charges as well.” He fought her, but he was really fighting himself.

“Sure, I fired my father’s gun. I was protecting myself, but I did not kill them. I loved them! They were my world. You said you believed I could not have killed them. I heard you. You said you believed me.” Grace was sobbing. “They will kill me, just like they killed Luc and Papa. You lied just to get to me. You lied.”

That one fact alone hurt Grace more than anything.

“I was just following your lead, Ms. Martin.” Cullen tamped down the urge to pull her tighter against him, to tenderly kiss away the tears he had caused. He was already feeling like a jerk for what he was doing, but pushed the feeling aside.

“So, this is your idea of protection, Marshal McKinnon? You know as well as I do Grace is innocent,” Laurie protested. “If you put her in jail, she won’t last a week. She will be exposed.
