Not surprisingly, snipers proved their importance in this new war of position. While most of the armies didn’t have specialized snipers in 1914, those who had been marksmen in civilian life or who were army regulars with a special talent soon got the attention of their officers. The Germans were the first to use snipers in a systematic way. They were given camouflage, telescopic sights, and small metal shields with loopholes, but these shields soon proved a burden and were often disposed of by the men. Snipers were generally free of sentry and fatigue duty, and German snipers did not move with their units but stayed in the same sector for months on end, thereby becoming intimately familiar with the terrain.
