Makalo caught me by my shoulders. We weren’t in the operating room anymore. I was sweating and panting as if I’d just run a marathon. Makalo steadied me. “Do you need to throw up?” he asked. I must’ve looked confused and lost because he repeated, “Are you nauseous?” I nodded weakly. Makalo looked towards Mr. MacNeil and jabbed a finger out the door. “In your own words, Mikkel,” he growled, “He’s just a kid. You shouldn’t do that without at least at a warning.”

A small trashcan was placed into my lap. I placed my forehead on the rim of it, my stomach twisting and churning and raging.

“It’s been a long day,” Mikkel responded. He sounded farther than he did before.

“Was it worth possibly messing him up—?”

“Yellow eyes.”

“A werewolf? All that for a werewolf?”

“Not a werewolf. Loki’s yellow eyes.”

I shut my eyes, forcing my breathing to a steady, even pace.

Mr. MacNeil finally said something I understood. “Azazel?”

Silence blanketed the room. The heavy air was pierced by Mikkel adding, “Ní hamháin Azazel. Glacfar mac damanta de caca g iarraidh a thabhairt ar aird hibrideach. Tá Dirk anseo adhmaid agus oíche id ó, ach bhí sé chomh maith an duine. Scrios siad an chuid sin de dó seomra do na Azazel a dhéanamh. Sé a diúltú de Thanatos.”

Makalo’s hands disappeared from my shoulders.

“Like I said, don’t question me. I have more years than you. I know what I’m talking about.”

The man’s last words whispered through my head. Mikkel wasn’t human. Did that mean Makalo wasn’t human? Was Lux Neo? Bri? I mean I could’ve guessed that Mr. MacNeil wasn’t human, but most of the others seemed so…well, not normal. But they seemed more human.

That revelation should be drilling into me and making every inch of me shake and tremble. I’m surrounded by inhuman beings. I could be killed by any number of them. I don’t know how powerful any of them are. I don’t even know what Mikkel did to make me see the man again.

But I wasn’t scared.

Really, I was more or less worried that I wasn’t fearful. I sat back as I raked my mind for at least a thread of fear.

I’ve seen monsters while I was in the Labs. I’ve seen horrors. I was chosen to fight those monsters and horrors. As far as I could tell, Makalo wasn’t a monster. Lux Neo wasn’t a horror. Bri was far too bubbly to be anything frightening. I wasn’t as sure with Mikkel and Mr. MacNeil.

“You’re not throwing up,” Mikkel said. I focused on him. He now sat behind Makalo’s desk, his eyes trained on me.

I cleared my throat, hoping my thoughts weren’t visible on my face. “I don’t feel sick.”

Mikkel glanced at Makalo. He took a deep breath. “Dirk…I have a proposal for you.” I looked up to him. He seemed so much calmer than earlier. “You see, Mikkel won’t admit it, but he’s hiding out here because he’s being hunted. He’s in dire need for someone to take over in case the worst happens.
