Most of the research has been in mice; however, small-scale studies have deemed the diet to be safe in humans with cancer. It also appears to enhance the effects of treatment whilst protecting normal cells. There are many plausible biochemical mechanisms to explain why low carbohydrate intake and, possibly more importantly, low insulin levels weaken cancer cells and halt progression. Once the cancer cells are weakened through glucose restriction it makes them more vulnerable and less resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (see here) has also been shown to be effective in promoting cancer-cell death when used in conjunction with the Ketogenic Diet, but this is not as yet scientifically proven.

From an evolutionary standpoint, we could say that consuming an abundant supply of carbohydrates only began with the introduction of agriculture, particularly grains, around 12,000 BC. In the evolution of man this is a fairly recent phenomenon and it is probably safe to say that before this first agricultural revolution it’s more than likely that man was fuelling his body mostly with ketones as opposed to glucose, relying mainly on animal protein, nuts, seeds and berries, alongside periods of famine. Many would argue that as humans we were most certainly not designed, nor have we evolved, to consume the amount of starchy carbohydrate in a typical modern Western diet.

Most cancers are avid consumers of glucose, but there are just a few that aren’t so glucose-dependent – such as 80 per cent of prostate cancers, some colon and lung cancers, and high-functioning cancers such as thyroid.

I would advise anyone with a cancer diagnosis to consider following a low glycaemic load diet (see here). To follow a true Ketogenic Diet it is best undertaken in conjunction with your medical team alongside expert supervision (see panel here).
