Gustave Moreau first visited Italy at age fifteen. His father, who could not accompany his family, gave his son a sketchbook to record the trip, and Moreau sketched his way across the peninsula. He went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but in the mid-nineteenth century, Italy was the place to study the great masters. In 1857, also urged on by his need to forget a woman he could not marry, Moreau returned.
