THE DAY DR JACK FOUGHT ROCKY

In the 1950s, Jack Matthews was a rock-hard centre for Cardiff and Wales, who also practised as a doctor. On the rugby pitch, he seemed to specialise in smashing opponents to bits; off it, he put them together again.

In 1943, Jack went to RAF St Athan with the Cardiff Medics boxing team, to fight against a side assembled from the US Army platoon who were stationed there. He came up against Rocky Marciano – later the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world.

The fight was a four-round contest. Marciano had stopped his previous six opponents but Dr Jack was no shrinking violet. The bout finished in a draw. Dr Jack gained many free pints over the years from telling this story. And the amazing thing is, it was true.
