Ralph Paine, referring in his book to the aircraft being used by the Naval Reserve Flying Corps, described the differences between these types of aircraft: “Equipping an aeroplane with pontoons in place of wheels enabled it to take off and land on the water,” but “stouter construction was needed to withstand the battering of the waves. This necessitated larger machines. The logical development was the flying-boat with a hull instead of pontoons.”6 While naval reserve units had several types of aircraft available at their air stations, contemporary photos of the Naval Experimental Station indicate that both the Curtiss R-6 seaplane and the HS-2 flying boat saw service over Long Island Sound supporting antisubmarine tests.
