IT WAS DIFFICULT TO find a comfortable position in which to sleep. Each time she turned, a different pain shot through her body. Renee cracked open her eyes slowly and looked around the drab hospital room. The one window faced the brick wall of another building. The grayish beige walls inside the room were as depressing as the weird smell of antiseptic that filled her nostrils. As she tried, with much difficulty, to turn over, she caught a whiff of something manly and slightly arousing. If anyone peeked behind the curtain, they would think she was a dog trying to chase its tail as her neck strained to not only see, but to gain a better position for the right ear to hear what Skylar was saying.

He chatted in a low voice on the phone.

“No, Tommy,” he said to his right hand man, “I am only modifying my schedule for the next three weeks or so. My lady was in an accident and she is pretty banged up.”

There was a break in the conversation. Skylar laughed softly. “You don’t need to know about my lady, that’s why.”

There was another pause.

“Yes, she is in a pretty rough state, but she is a scrapper you know. She has endured a lot worse than this, so I have faith that she is going to do well during her recovery.”

“I’m glad he believes in me; right now, I don’t even believe in myself,” Renelda said the brick wall outside of the window. It seemed like her only friend in the odd scenario.

He was still speaking in hushed tones into the phone, “No, I am going to maintain my afternoon training sessions with the team. We are too close to Nationals and the US Open to have any changes in their schedules,” Skylar said to Tommy. “Yes, cancel all other appointments until after the Open.”

There must have been some words exchanged because Skylar’s voice was firm when he responded, “I don’t care, Tommy. They pay for training. We have staff to train them. Unless they have personally paid for private lessons with me, you can tell them I have a family emergency. Hell, tell them I am using some of my FMLA time.”

His next words were the ones that made butterflies flutter in Renelda’s stomach, “My lady needs me, and that’s more important to me than the job right now. The rest will have to sort itself out.”

A slow tear traveled down her cheek as she thought of Geoff. He never put anything she wanted or needed above his career. His career came first, along with his multimillion dollar clients. She was always left with the scraps. This sat differently in her cup holder of life’s lessons in bullshittery. Someone made her a priority for something other than entertainment for the evening.

Skylar ended the call and stepped inside the curtain to find her tear-stained face. “Renelda, are you in pain?”

“Yes,” she told him. That was all she could muster between the sharp pains in her knee.
