Lata was the second singer after Pankaj Mullick to receive the highest film award from the government. Lata had completed 60 years in the world and this award was a reward for all her trials and tribulations. Lata had now reached the summit of Mount Everest. There was nowhere else to go for her. She had achieved everything that she could. But more would come in the years ahead.

Another achievement that came her way was in 1984. The Government of Madhya Pradesh considered her a daughter of the state since was born in Indore. They instituted the Lata Mangeshkar award in her name to recognize musical talents from across the country. Naushad was the first recipient of the award in 1984.
