THIRTEEN

Tucker sat inside his car outside the Bishop home as the sun came up, his mind still unable to settle down. Maybe Ruby had been right when she’d told him he was looking for something that wasn’t there. A connection that was nothing more than a wild goose chase. Even with the bracelet and a possible link to the separate trafficking case, the evidence was still threadbare, but something about Riley had convinced him she was innocent.

He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to ward off the fatigue. Like so many other parents he met in his line of work, Riley Bishop was facing one of the worst experiences someone could go through—not knowing where your child was. In his mind, even though there was still hope that they would find her, the unknown had to feel almost as devastating as death.

Tucker leaned his head against the back of the seat, needing a shot of caffeine, but he didn’t want to leave until the investigating officer showed up. Wanted to make sure they experienced no more surprises. His boss, and partner for that matter, would probably be irritated with him for not getting any sleep last night, but for some reason he needed to make sure Riley and Oliver were safe.

He'd spent years working through dealing with the trauma and daily pressures his job entailed. The role could be brutal due to the sheer magnitude of what he’d seen over the past decade, and situations involving children were even more difficult to cope with. So was the guilt surrounding the cases of those missing that they never found. Or those they found too late.

He glanced back at the house, unsure what was different with this case. Other than the connection of the photo, Riley Bishop was no different than the other parents he’d worked with. He picked up the photo and stared at the house. By now, the emotions that surfaced had lessened, but not the questions. What did the twenty-five-year-old cold case of his brother have to do with Sadie Bishop’s disappearance?

Thirty minutes later, he met briefly with the officer who showed up, then headed for Zilker Park where his parents lived, stopping briefly on the way for donuts. It had been a couple of weeks since he’d last dropped by, and though he did his best to communicate, he knew his mother especially missed him. Friday night pizza had been the norm for years, an open invitation. His sister, brother-in-law, and two nephews typically showed up, but he was usually busy working on a case.

His mother answered the door before he had a chance to ring the bell. She pulled him into a big hug then ushered him into the house with a wide grin on her face. “That was just because I’ve missed you and that am grateful for whatever reason prompted you to come by.”

He held up the donuts. “I come bearing gifts.”

“Something smells amazing.” His father walked into the room and gave his son a hug.
