Within LCSH , WritingâIdentification is formally linked to the second heading Legal documentsâIdentification by a cross-reference; but it is not linked to the other three, and clearly it should be. Tracings, then, often create aggregations of related subject headings that are not brought together by the red books. Just as tracings alone are not adequate to provide full entry into the subject heading system, the red books themselves are not fully adequate either.
The fourth way to find the right subject category term for a topic is to make use of the browse displays of precoordinated strings of subdivisions that appear in the online catalog. The example of Thomas Jefferson (Figure 2) is relevant here.
