Chapter 5: The Station of the Living Dead

Unexpectedly, Delphia’s phone began to ring. “It’s Lydia!” she said to John, who was just preparing a cup of morning coffee. He never was much of a morning person but had learned to be one over the years. Talking before drinking his coffee was not his usual routine, but for his daughter overseas, he would make an exception.

“Put her on speakerphone,” he said and then took a sip of his steaming hot black coffee.

“Hi, Lydia,” said Delphia with a smile. “How are things going?”

“Hey, Mom, listen, I need your help. My tickets to get back home are set for me to get a connecting flight from Canada to Columbus, and well, I got news that the border is pretty much closed. I don’t want to have to quarantine in there by myself. Not only that, but I have called the travel agency numerous times and can’t get through to talk to an agent. I just got a message that says I must buy new tickets online. Can you help me get new e-tickets?”

Delphia’s heart dropped, “Well, yes, honey. I’ll try my best. I hope you can get back into the States okay.”

“The president announced that all American citizens would be allowed to come into the States,” John chimed in, hoping his input would help calm the situation.

“Well, that’s a relief!” said Delphia. “What date should I buy the tickets for?”

“Tomorrow,” said Lydia. “I need to get back fast. The number of cases around here is really starting to multiply. It’s all over the news, and everyone seems to be gearing up for the worst, and they’re even saying that they are expecting millions of cases and lots of deaths.”

“Well, let me get online and see what I can do,” said Delphia. “I’ll message you the flight information as soon as I have it. If worse comes to worst, I’ll try to contact the American Embassy in Brazil, but let’s be trusting God for His help and provision. Let me say a prayer for us right now.”

After Delphia had finished praying, Lydia, John, and Delphia said their goodbyes and I love you’s. Then, immediately after hanging up, Delphia headed straight to her computer to see what she could find out about changing the tickets for Lydia. On her way to the computer, her cell phone rang yet again.

“Oh, hi, Mom. How are you?” Delphia answered upon seeing the word “mom” across the top of her cell phone screen.

“Yes, what do you mean Dad’s not doing so well? Has he been checking his blood sugar and taking his insulin?” she asked. John couldn’t hear his mother-in-law’s voice on the other end, but he could tell from Delphia’s face, responses, and tone of voice the conversation was not going well.

“Well, when can I come see him?” she asked. A bit of silence followed.

“You mean to tell me Dad is critically ill, and neither you nor I can go see him? Are you kidding me right now?” Delphia asked, completely stunned.
