Outside, huddled in an alcove in the mews near the corner of the house, Charlie glanced over at Martin and smiled toothlessly. “That’s pretty, ain’t it?”

Martin frowned. “We should’ve never took this job, Charlie. I ain’t got no quarrel with this girl and I don’t know what ‘is nibs is plannin for ‘er, but it ain’t gonna be good.”

“We did take it, and we won’t be gettin’ out of it. Whatever ‘e asks us to do to that girl, we will!”

“We’ll ‘ang,” Martin protested. “I don’t want me neck stretched!”

“Whether we ‘ang or whether ‘e puts a pistol ball between our ears, you and me’s dead just the same,” Charlie insisted. “Our only chance is to do what ‘e asks. Right now, it’s just to watch ‘er but that’ll change soon enough, I wager.”

Martin shivered. He didn’t like it. Not at all. But Charlie had saved his hide more than once and he’d taken to following his lead in all things. This wouldn’t be any different. Still, he cocked his head and listened to the faint piano music coming from the house. She seemed a sad little thing to him and he felt sorry for her, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t put a knife in her to save his own arse. Growing up where they did, you learned early enough that you did whatever it took to survive. He could be as hard hearted as he needed to be.

“So we tell him about ‘er slippin’ in at dawn and about the companion she ̓ired?”

Charlie nodded. “We tell him everythin’, Martin. That’s the only way we’re getting out of this one.”
