At least a dozen new car dealerships were located directly across the street from Otto’s salvage. Rows of shiny new vehicles, balloons tied to their antennas, lined the road for what seemed like miles in either direction.

After Billy was reasonably certain the coast was clear, he crossed the street carrying his duffel bag. He needed wheels, and he needed them fast. It had to be a 4 x 4, with an off-road package; something besides another truck would be best. And it had to be an automatic. Operating a clutch with his bad leg was out of the question.

At the Nissan dealer, a fully loaded, alpine green XTERRA, with oversized, road-eating tires, caught his eye.

He paid cash.
