*We have since developed an agreement to move the books to the Minnesota Historical Society Press, where they will benefit from more comprehensive marketing and the ability to stay in print much longer. And in 2019, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe began a major Ojibwe-language resource-development initiative. I was asked to coordinate the initiative’s first-language book-development effort. The tribe identified twenty-two fluent first speakers who wanted to work on language books. The staff at their Aanjibimaadizing program coordinated food and facilities, and we brought in all of the available speakers they identified, each paired up with a transcriber, plus linguists and artists. Our first session produced 150 pages of Ojibwe text in fifty stories. We plan to do three such sessions every year for the foreseeable future and publish books for all reading levels.
