This same tension, which was again left unresolved, also appeared in Wyntoun’s chronicle.215 John Mair, on the other hand, merely contented himself with commenting that Lulach was dead before King Máel Coluim mac Donnchada was inaugurated.216 Scottish historical perceptions about King Lulach changed once again in the writings of Boece, where the taking of the throne by King Lulach was relegated to a rebellion that occurred after King Máel Coluim mac Donnchada began his reign as king of Alba.

Leslie took this re-interpretation one step further:
