Leadership came very definitely from Pa:3, who has already figured prominently in other contexts. It was at his house that assemblies were usually held. The group of Pa:4 took less part in these; this was a ‘leaf’ likely to be shed in the next generation.

The members of the patrifamily were very proud of the number of songs they knew and the number of dance steps they had originated. Pa:5 and 6 were leading dancers of the Pumpkin Kiva, and Pa:6 particularly was proud of his skill. Pa:5’s job prevented him from attending all the rehearsals of his Kiva for a corn dance, but he was pleased at having been able to join in, with only one rehearsal, and do even the most complex steps on the day. Pa 7, the youngest of the brothers, surprised everyone by becoming a member of the drum cult as this involves a lot of arduous restrictions and he was considered to be a bit of a gay dog. This group was noted for the fact that it had all its young children dancing in the corn and other ‘unlimited’ dances. They probably attained the record when they put a three-year-old boy in to the dance line. He danced throughout the period of several hours, and at the end no praise was too lavish from his doting relatives. Discipline within the group is difficult because Pa 13 is incapacitated and rather dependent, and Kiva officials have had to take matters into their own hands when the occasion arose. But they spoke to Pa:3 about it first. The women of this group are again fairly peripheral, and this is accentuated by personal circumstances. The wives of Pa:5 and Pa:7 are the daughters of progressives, and do not want to take too much part in their husbands’ ceremonial activities. They do not - cannot - stop their children from doing so. Indeed, as we have seen, the children are noted for their participation. The wife of Pa:6 is a Tewa, who is somewhat independent, and is treated cautiously in consequence. She is ‘modern’ and difficult to integrate. Strangely enough it is the unmarried daughters of Pa:3 and the unmarried sisters of Pa:5, 6 and 7 who play the major part in the group’s female affairs, and they are constantly trying to involve the ‘wives’. These latter do the necessary minimum. This patrifamily assembles more than most, and it is noted and pointed out as a very active musical group. Both Pa:1 and Pa:2 were men of strong personality, who left their mark on their paternal descendants.

Genealogy XIV shows a small but strongly knit group, which includes two men already known to us; Pb:1 (W:4) and Pb:4 (husband of F:5). The offices held by them are shown below; again all the older males are Katsina.

Pb:1 Lt. Governor, Koshare, drummer, Mavorli

Pb:2 Fiscale, dancer

Pb:3 Fiscalito, singer

Pb:4 Fiscalito, Governor, drummer

Pb:5 Dancer

Pb:6
