When Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the General Assembly of the United Jewish Communities in November 2006, he memorably invoked parallels between current complacency about the looming Iranian nuclear threat and the passivity of the world community during the late 1930s in the face of the mounting menace posed by Nazi Germany. Despite the worrisome nature of the current challenge, I have my doubts as to the aptness of the parallel. I certainly would not argue that for American Jewry it is 1938 all over again. For better and worse, we face very different challenges in this country than we did seventy years ago, although, as I will suggest at the end of this essay, we are beset by a paralysis quite similar to that suffered by our forbearers, albeit one that concerns very different issues.
