FAIL BY ACTION, NOT BY PASSIVE FEAR

Some training programs are essentially a boring hour with human resources, doing paperwork, maybe with an older employee assigned to “show you around.” Not at Acuity. Salzmann described it in detail:

Every employee is given an iPad on their first day. We do a video on how to park, get through security, find the training room, where the restrooms are—everything they need to know. It is no insult to new hires; we do it to create a great experience and quickly help them understand not just the logistics but also our culture. Classroom instructors are in the video: “Hi, I’m Dave, and I’ll be teaching . . .” We want to empower them, not hold their hands. We provide 2.5 months of classroom training. Then, for 1.5 months, they will watch someone experienced doing their job—an experiential mentorship. They can do this both from the classroom and in person. The workstations are designed to be conducive to this type of learning.
