10 Nissim de Camondo (left) was eager to serve in the French military during the First World War, and yearned for the excitement of aerial combat. In letters home to his father and sister, he downplayed the brutal scenes he witnessed. He was shot down behind enemy lines in September 1917, in the midst of a reconnaissance mission.

11 The collector Moïse de Camondo transformed his family mansion at no. 63, rue de Monceau into an homage to the Petit Trianon at the Château de Versailles. His aim was to celebrate the style of the ancien régime, which he considered the apogee of French cultural achievement. In honour of his son, Moïse bequeathed the house to the French state on his death in 1935, and it opened as the Musée Nissim de Camondo the following year.
