For years, people thought that the best leadership style was a “participative” style, which prescribed listening to your people and involving them in decision making. Autocratic leadership, which involves the leader taking control and telling people what to do, was considered inappropriate.

In the 1960s, my friend Paul Hersey and I questioned those assumptions. The problem we found was that asking inexperienced members of a team to participate in decision making amounted to “pooling ignorance.” Some people need a “directive” leadership style until their knowledge and skills mature. Our response was to develop a concept called Situational Leadership®, which can be summed up in the phrase “Different strokes for different folks.” In the 1980s, Paul Hersey and I decided to go in separate directions in our work. Situational Leadership® II is the model my colleagues and I developed.

So what is the best leadership style? The one that matches the developmental needs of the person with whom you’re working.
