Chapter 28
âForgive me, Christian, while I take this,â he said, tapping a key. âHello? Oh hello, Doctor. How areââ He paused, listening. âReally? Yes. Yes, heâs here with me. Yes, I will tell him. Excellent. Until then, Doctor. Godspeed to you.â
Chris opened his palms in question.
âFeel like going for a drive, Christian?â
âWhere?â
âBack to the hospital, of course. That was Dr. Ingledew. She wants to see you straight away.â His quirky smile suggested more to the story than a simple meeting.
âWhat about the police?â
Llewellyn shrugged. âI donât believe the good physician wants to turn you over to the authorities. Iâm confident she believes in your innocence. And as I said, I think she likes you.â
âHardly,â he scoffed. âNo. Iâm pretty sure she thinks Iâm an idiot.â
âNonetheless, she has someone there you will be interested in meeting, I should think. Come along then, we need to make haste,â he said, standing.
Chris was at the door before he realized heâd left his sandwich. Seeing Bambi heading toward their table with a paper bag in hand, he hastily pulled his cap low on his brow and exited the tavern.
The sunny morning had morphed into a dull afternoon blanketed with gray overcast. It didnât help his somber mood. Michael opened the rectory door before they were on the stoop.
âAh, Michael. Weâll be needing the car for a time, yes? No need to accompany us. Please watch over the chapel in my absence will you? Thereâs a good lad.â
Clearly not liking the decision, the big man gave a slight bow.
Llewellyn lifted the keys from a peg in the kitchen and handed them to Chris.
âI donât have my license, remember?â
âNeither do I, lad. But you are a young man, and Iâm not. I trust your driving more than I trust my own, so thereâs an end to it.â
Figuring he didnât have much more to lose, Chris accepted the keys and settled behind the steering wheel. Once on the road, he asked, âSo, are you going to tell me whatâs going on?â
âIn all honesty, Iâm not sure myself. The good doctor said she has a man named Collingswood in her hospital. She wants us to identify him before she calls the authorities.â
âWhatâs wrong with him?â
âNow, how should I know? The doctor didnât tell me, and I didnât ask, now did I.â
Chris frowned. âDo you think itâs the same guy?â
âI do,â he said without pause.
âGreat,â Chris replied with little enthusiasm. While it was imperative to ID the man who shot the vicar, Chris had another concern gnawing at him. If he got back the Dial, would he be expected to continue learning to be a Vovnik healer? Would he have to give up his teaching position to go on a pilgrimage of healing the sick and infirm? Is that really what was expected of him? âGreat,â he said again, just under his breath.
