INFLUENCING A BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

A common saying understood by social workers is that change is not easy. Resistance is a common denominator in all change-oriented activities. The degree of personal emotional pain can be incredibly severe and debilitating even while understanding a new course of action will result in a positive, more productive outcome. Changing behavior patterns is literally moving from the known to the unknown. The unknown is filled with fears and what ifs, whereas there is comfort in the known, no matter how negative the situation might be. Boards of directors are no different from social work clients. EDs and policy practitioners alike find that it is difficult to convince a board that a change is necessary. No matter the issue or the agency, advocacy to change a course of action or to adopt a new program is a difficult sale.
