The moment they were out of the room, Zehra turned to her father.

“He’s not what he says he is,” Zehra signed to him, her hands flying in all directions, matching the emotions she felt. “There's nothing in him but hatred and jealousy for our Emperor. He must leave our planet.”

“What is this you’re saying?” her brother, Iskander, said.

“I think she just said she knew what he was feeling,” her brother Alewar said. “Is she sick?”

“It’s true, his feelings are so strong, I can feel them emanating off of him in a tidal wave like the sea.”

Zehra waved her hand through the air like a wave.

Most of the crowd had already left the large chamber and were in the dining room. The Emperor and Empress left out the back, but the young prince Madan remained.

“What is she saying about the man Sollix?” Prince Madan said as he watched their heated discussion.

“Nothing, Your Highness, we’ll take care of this,” her father said with a low bow to him.

Zehra tried to explain.

“Not now. We will discuss this later. Stop it,” her mother said, grabbing her hands and pushing them down.

Zehra wanted to scream. It was like being told to shut up and slapping her face. She ripped her hands away from her mother and turned on her heel. Her brother Garen was quicker to go after her this time. He grabbed her by the hand and pulled her along into the hallway leading to the dining hall. The rest of their family went to find their seats.

“Tell me,” he signed to her.

“No, you won’t believe me either.” Zehra crossed her arms and glared at him.

“Of course I will. I always believe you, don’t I?” Garen had a point there.

“Today, I found a piko in the woods,” Zehra said, watching his face for any reaction.

His expression didn’t change.

“But, I wasn’t looking down or looking for it. I was just walking along when the fear punched me, here,” she signed, pointing to her gut. “It was the most powerful fear I had ever experienced, but I wasn’t afraid. It was coming from outside me.”

Garen’s expression still didn’t change.

“I brought him home, and it happened again. While I was sitting in my room and,” she started to say tending to her animals but changed her sign to, “cleaning up my room, when it happened again.”

“You felt what the animal was feeling?”

“Yes. I know it sounds stupid, but that’s what happened. I sensed its feelings just like I’m sensing these awful feelings from Sollix.”

Garen’s head flew up and Zehra turned and saw her oldest brother Iskander approaching.

“Come in, now we’re about to begin,” he signed to them both using her language. It was handy when you didn’t want anyone else listening in on the conversation.

“We’ll finish this later. For now, leave it. You cannot oust a guest from the palace based on your feelings or anyone else’s,” Garen reassured her with a tap of his hand on hers.

Iskander grabbed Zehra by the other hand before she could protest and dragged her along.
