The rising sun cast its ruby rays over the eastern hills as three travelers stumbled down a gentle slope, tired and hungry. Sterling had insisted that they travel most of the night, and had finally consented to stopping for three hours of sleep just before daybreak. Just now they found themselves approaching a small village.
âI sure would like to stop for breakfast at an inn,â Dathan sighed with a yawn. âIâm so hungry I could eat a whole hart and so tired I could sleep for a week!â
Sterling stopped in the roadway and turned to face him. âI think you have a good idea, my friend. Letâs do it!â
Dathan snorted. âAnd what would we use for money?â
Sterling stared at him. âMy father is a marquisâdo you think he would send me penniless on a quest such as this?â
It was Dathanâs turn to stare. âYouâre serious about stopping here, arenât you?â
âOf course.â
âOh, dear, do you think itâs safe?â Lanna asked with a worried frown.
Sterling nodded. âI think we can do it with little risk of discovery. I figure weâre more than thirty miles now from Melzarâs farm.â
The twins were overjoyed. âIâm going to eat until next Tuesday without stopping,â Dathan declared. âSee if I donât!â
Sterling grinned. âYou think you can afford that since my father is paying for it?â
Dathan shrugged. âTo be honest, I wasnât thinking about the money; I was thinking about the food!â
Five minutes later they approached the front door of an ivy-covered inn, stepping around two stacks of lumber placed close to the door. âWatch out for that plank,â Lanna said, pointing to a long beam standing on end. âIt looks like it could topple over at any moment and crush someone.â
âThey must be doing some work on the building,â Dathan commented.
âAye, but you would think they would stack their lumber a little further from the door. Who wants to climb over beams and planks just to get inside?â
âIf anyone asks any questions, keep quiet and let me do the talking,â Sterling instructed his companions. âIt will be safer that way.â
âDo you expect any trouble?â Dathan asked quietly.
âNay, but itâs best to be prepared.â With a broad smile, he opened the door. âSweet cakes and creamery butter, here I come!â
The proprietor of the inn led them to a table in the dining salon. âIt is an honor to have you with us today, sire,â he said to Sterling, bowing low as he spoke.
âThank you, sir,â Sterling responded. He turned to the twins. âOrder as much as you want. You deserve it, and we have no idea what lies ahead.â
âWe have a rich venison stew, sire, accompanied by the most excellent fritters and fruit jellies. In addition, our chef has prepared the finest troutâ¦â
âBring us three full orders of all of it,â Sterling ordered. âWeâve been traveling a bit this morning and weâre quite hungry and tired.â
The proprietor bowed. âOf course, sire. Right away, sire. And how is your father, sire?â
âI havenât been home in a few days, my good man,â Sterling replied.
