There was a lot of moving about from the species, so Anne had to concentrate hard to ensure her thoughts were heard in everyone’s minds. Once she had everyone’s attention, she pictured each team together in a circle. Everyone did as she asked and stood in circles.

As if by magic, ten large coloured balls flew through the air and came to rest in the middle of every circle, holding their position about two metres off the ground. The shiny balls were covered in a pattern of green, gold, and purple triangles. When the sun’s rays hit the panels, it caused them to sparkle and shimmer.

The species were entranced with the brilliant balls but wondered what to do with them. Anne pictured the metallic baseball bats on the ground, and everyone looked down and noticed the bats. Using the one closest to her, Anne concentrated and then raised the bat into the air. Using telepathy, she swung it back and forth. She then showed an image of the bat hitting the ball, causing it to break open.

Everyone now understood that breaking open the ball was the goal of the contest. Steve held up the brown box, implying that the first team who broke it open would win a prize.

One of the Laskas pictured the inside of an empty ball. Steve understood and replied with a thought of white smoke filling the inside, implying that what was inside the ball was a surprise. The kids laughed at the other species’ confused expressions.

Anne sent the image of everyone standing ready and prepared to try and hit the ball. The species understood and took their positions.

Again, Sami sent a spark in the air, making a loud sound and starting the competition.

Everyone was capable of picking up the bat, but some had trouble hitting the ball hard enough to break it. The Das on each team offered to try first because their minds were so controlled, and everyone agreed.

The bats rose high in the air, then they were swung at the ball. The Das tried several times, but they were unable to hit the ball hard enough to break it open. The bats clunked onto the ground. The Laskas took their turn, but they, too, were unable to achieve any success.

Then it was the Nossos’ turn. They seemed the strongest at this competition probably because of the anger in their hearts. Hitting the ball helped them burn off steam. They made a few dents in the ball, but they were unable to break it open.

The Saliks telepathically picked up the bat. While looking at the ball, they pictured themselves taking turns with the Nossos to hit the ball. Maybe together they could break it open. The Nossos seemed a little nervous as they looked back at their Salik team member. The other species jumped up and down and clapped their hands, encouraging the Saliks and the Nossos to work together.

After their bats rose in the air, each Nosso and Salik took turns bashing the ball.
