Ewan gingerly put the phone to his ear. “Hello, then?”

“Hi. Nash Brazel here. I understand you’re staying with my sister.”

“Aye,” he said cautiously, wondering if he was about to be challenged to a fight.

“My wife and I want you to come to dinner on Sunday.”

“My apologies, but I’ll not be able tae accept yer invitation. I’ll be gone by then.”

There was a long pause. “I see. So, she’s good enough to stay with for the weekend, but not good enough that you’re willing to meet her family?”

Ewan was horrified by the accusation. “Nae, tis not like that. I think the world of yer sister. But I’m tae leave.”

“Stay an extra day.”

“Would that I could.”

There was another long pause. “You’d better not hurt my sister. Are we clear?”

Ewan heaved a sigh. “Aye, clear as a loch on a summer morn.”

“Hmm. Put Luna back on the phone, will you?”

He handed the phone to Luna, she took one look at him and her expression turned wrathful. She blasted into the phone. “What did you say to him? You have no right to lecture my friends. I’m twenty-four, not four, and you’re dead meat when I see you!”

Ewan listened to her take after her brother, continuing her defense of him. No one had ever bothered to do such a thing before. As he’d always held his own, there’d been no need, but watching her take her brother to task had something melting inside of him.

The ice around his heart, perhaps?
