Why the Expansionary View Will Triumph
We find ourselves in the midst of this battle between perspectivesâas the world turned 2000 the Futurist on its front cover proclaimed the emergence of âthe Global Brain.â The modern media seems obsessed with stories of the melding of mind and machine.
However, there are several reasons that this âgroup mindâ ideology will not triumph. For one, too many individuals of the Expansionary Vanguard, as I label the legions of pro-human and pro-growth people, are actively campaigning for interplanetary exploration. This in and of itself will get the species off its duff and prevent it from spending eternity contemplating its cybernetic navel.
Sheer economic necessity will also trigger a movement off planet Earth. The âthoughtâ and knowledge industries, Internet-based companies included, cannot in and of themselves support human civilization. Our speciesâ energy and âhardâ manufacturing-based industries must continue to thrive if we are to progress. We will eventually turn to the spheresâplanets and asteroidsâfor our energy resources and other material rewards. In short, we must turn to space travel and exploration if we are to improve our standard of living on Earth. Without an ever-growing array of Earth-orbiting satellites, we could not hope to maintain our modern defense, banking, or telecommunications systems. Space is a place for humanity to live and prosperâit will beckon us long before we become absorbed into the noosphereâs supersapient being.
In the final analysis, the expansionary world view will overwhelm the seductive global brain concept because the human species has always and will continue to strive to meet its true destiny, vitalization. We all sense that we are made for something better; we have the ability to transform the Earth and the universe, bringing light to darkness, transforming the cosmos into a thing of harmony and beauty. This sense will drive us to bring life, including elements of Earthâs natural environment, to dead or moribund spheres, and spread human consciousness throughout the cosmos.
Species coalescence is one of the processes by which we will get ever closer to reaching this destiny. In that sense, we pursue species coalescence for the same reason we direct our efforts in such activities as biogenesis, cybergenesis, and dominionization. We will never allow species coalescence to drift into the formation of an amorphous global brain.
Now, let us begin to explore our destiny.
