IT WAS NEAR DARK AS we arrived at the parking lot above Goat Rock Beach. There wasnât another car anywhere in sight. I grabbed my flashlight out of the glove compartment, and we headed down the path toward the beach. I was intrigued by Augustâs life in the jungle, and I really wanted to hear more. But something was pulling her aside. In her mind, something had been left unfinished. Maybe she was trying to bring back that nightâto discover somewhere in the shadows of her mind who had hurt her.
As our feet touched the pebbled beach, we both knew where we were going. We strode quickly to the sandy area below the mesa. August took off her shoes and dropped them there. We headed up the trail, August, in the lead. There was an orange glow across the horizon, and grey speckles of twilight peppered the sky. As we arrived at the top, the thunderous pounding of the waves shattered my sense of well-being. August drifted toward the edge of the mesa, stood there, and looked down. I approached and stood beside her, staring down at the tide pulsating and crashing against the rocks. I was astounded that anyone would ever live from such a fall. They would have had to have had a perfect entry into the water because there were jagged and protruding rocks everywhereâexcept in one area. August put her arms around my waist. I looked down at her. She said nothing.
âAugust, letâs go. Letâs get away from the edge.â She said nothing staring down into the hole where you could almost see the depths of the bottom. I could only imagine descending into that inky darkness. âCome on,â I said.
âOkay, give me a minute, okay.â
I let her go and walked back toward the middle of the Mesa. Heights just arenât my thing. I knew she had to get her head together about this.
As I turned around, August was throwing her dress down in a heap. I yelled, and ran for her, âAugust! No!â It was too late. I saw her rise on her toes, run, and leap and then disappear from view.
âOh, god, no!â I fell to the ground on my knees. âWhat are you doing?â I yelled.
I ran to the edge, but she had vanished. It took a moment for me to take it all in. I ran for the path and hurried down to the beach, the light from the flashlight jiggling as I fumbled down that hill, catching my boots in the thick sand at the bottom. I flew around the first rock outcropping and sprinted for the beach. It was high tide this time. God, maybe theyâd think I threw her off that cliff, myself. Oh, please, God, let her be alive. Why would she do that? Why?
As I came around another rock outcropping, running for the water, there she was. Waist-deep, trudging out of the surf with a grin of triumph across her face.
âAre you all right?â I yelled, âWhat
