Chapter Four
The next two weeks were a complete dream. Roy spent every available moment convincing Kitty of his feelings and showing her what it meant to be truly wanted and desired. He tortured himself by staying away. She didn’t deserve to be rushed into anything. Roy didn’t need time to think about his feelings. Her scent, her personality, everything about her pulled him in.
When he was around her, he was like a moth to a flame. Her entire aura burned brighter than any sunlight that he knew. Sitting across from her, he watched her tongue peek out the side of her mouth as she decided where to move. They were playing a game of chess and he could defeat her in three short moves, but he loved to watch her think it out. She took everything so seriously. Their time was running out, and before long he’d take her out into the night with the moon riding high in the sky. He would make love to her, claiming her for himself and for his wolf.
Cutting off the thoughts, Roy couldn’t bring himself to think about walking away. Once he claimed her and she accepted his claiming, he had to walk off and leave for the next man to make his claim.
In the forest, his brothers would be there, watching, waiting. When it was all over and she watched him leave, one of them would come up and embrace her. Then the cycle started again.
Last chance.
Shaking his head, he glanced up to see Kitty watching him. She must know their time was fast coming to an end. In the last two weeks he’d spent every available moment telling her how much he loved her while she hadn’t spoken the words to him.
Part of him was terrified. If one of them was to fail then the claiming stopped altogether. The curse of the wolf would be complete, and they’d be bound to their wolves, never allowed to roam the world as a man.
“Are you okay? You’ve gone really quiet. It’s kind of scary after you’ve done nothing but talk,” she said, moving her knight.
He saw she was about to go into checkmate but decided not to end the game too soon.
“I talk because you like being quiet.”
“No, you’ve got a lot more fun tales to tell about your brothers. I’m going to tell them all, you know, how you used their misfortune to seduce me.”
Roy chuckled as she waggled her brows, conspiring against him.
“Kitty, you know—”
She cut him off by holding up her hand. “I know what is going to happen tomorrow night, Roy. I can read a calendar and know our time together is coming to an end.” She stared down at her hands. “I don’t have to like what’s going to come. I’m going to miss you.”
His heart soared.
“You’ve liked our time together?” he asked.
“I’ve never laughed so much in my life. When you actually put the effort in, you were amazing to be with, Roy.”
Tears glistened in her eyes, and he felt like a total bastard.
