Pinched Nerves

A pinched nerve occurs when surrounding tissues—such as bones, cartilage (discs), muscles, or tendons—apply too much pressure to a nerve. This pressure disrupts the nerve’s function. Signs and symptoms of a pinched nerve include:

•Numbness or decreased sensation

•Sharp, aching, or burning pain, sometimes radiating outward

•Paresthesia (a “pins and needles” sensation)

•Muscle weakness

•Loss of normal deep-tendon reflexes (assessed with a reflex hammer by a doctor)

Pinched nerves can occur at many sites in your body. A herniated disc in your lower spine, for example, can put pressure on a lumbar nerve root, causing pain that radiates down the back of your leg. A pinched nerve in your neck can cause pressure down your arm. Pressure on a nerve in your wrist can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome, pain, and numbness in your hand and fingers.

With rest and other conservative treatments, most people recover from a pinched nerve within a few days or weeks. In certain cases, surgery may be needed.
