You see I would be overjoyed

If this word you would avoid

Pretend that you did not make the sound

Don’t say it was me or look around

You can be just as surprised as can be

When someone says “ABBIE”

And you say “Who ME?”

They all might think it’s nothing more

Than a passing truck or a squeaky door

They may suspect but would not be sure

There would be no need to underscore

The noise or the word I do abhor

But Abbie was amazed

Because of how she was raised

“To pretend would be like falsifying

And mother - wouldn’t that be like lying

I am sure you would be horrified

If you knew that I had truly lied.”
