Across town from Mass General, at the Harvard Medical School quadrangle, was a young neurologist named Howard Weiner, only five years older than me, who was in the process of completing his training and ready to set up an immunology laboratory to study MS.

We hit it off. Howard had begun to treat MS patients with a blood-cleaning procedure, called plasma exchange, to remove toxic proteins in the bloodstream. We decided to merge our two studies together—mine with cyclophosphamide and his with plasma exchange. We’d still need 20 patients in each group, but it would be far more efficient to test both treatments together because we could share the same untreated control group. And furthermore, we’d be able to compare the two treatments against each other. I also decided to work in his new laboratory. Thus began a collaboration, and a friendship, that has lasted more than 40 years.

Science is a highly competitive, tension-packed activity. Every scientist frets over the possibility of being scooped, or worse yet publishing something later found to be wrong, and one needs friends to make it through the bumps in the road. Howard and I became brothers in science after that first meeting. We’ve worked together in studies of immunology, genetics, and therapeutics and served as mutual support systems as well as sounding boards for each other’s ideas.
