Toolbox for Cognitive Challenges

There are some good ways to compensate for cognitive difficulties at home, ranging from keeping lists to tactics used for problem solving. Implementing changes in your life can be frustrating, but repeated use of these tips can help you form healthy habits.

Memory

Write things down! Be sure to include the “who, what, where, when, and why” so your notes contain the critical data that you need. Use a daily planner to keep track of all of your information. Use a pillbox with slots for every day of the week to keep track of your medication. Check out electronic gadgets, such as mini tape recorders, to assist you if note taking is challenging.

Problem Solving

Come up with several different strategies for any given situation and list the pros and the cons of each solution. Consider asking someone else for their input. Since problem-solving skills are often slower in individuals who are experiencing cognitive difficulties, taking your time and thinking things through can help you get past the frustration.

Organization

Make a checklist of tasks, breaking down larger tasks into smaller parts. Get all of the supplies you’ll need and organize them in your workspace. Plan your day early in the morning. Remember to prioritize and pace yourself. Work on more demanding tasks when your energy level is higher.

Attention

Try to avoid fatigue by taking mental breaks. Keep yourself on task by asking yourself if you are doing what you’d planned to be doing right now. Keep the television and radio off to minimize distractions.

The trick to cognitive retraining is your willingness to learn and your flexibility to integrate new strategies. Being patient with yourself, asking for help, and practicing new skills will facilitate your success.
