Most Common Conflict Mishaps

Because conflict is so important, you should watch out for the common pitfalls. Here is a rundown of the most frequently made conflict mistakes and their quick fixes:

Too Little Conflict

First, read your work to make sure you have defined and given credence to your character's main goal and introduced scene goals. Second, make your characters fight for what they want.

A great measure of the strength of a romantic conflict is to ask yourself if the conflict could be resolved simply by having the hero and heroine sit down and discuss the situation. If the conflict arises solely because she assumes something untrue about the hero — or vice versa — this is not a valid conflict. Make your conflict real and believable.
