The Backpack

Although you could carry your survival supplies around in a suitcase, a backpack is certainly preferable. By carrying your supplies around on your back, the weight is better distributed on your frame, allowing you to carry more. Carrying even a very light weight in your arms will tire you out after only a very short time. Which leads to the other advantage; a backpack leaves your arms and hands free. Climbing, using maps and compasses, tools, etc,...all can be done much more easily and quickly if your hands are unburdened by supplies.

Also, for the issue of security, if you're carrying a weapon you'll likely need it in a hurry. Having your hands constantly free promotes the ability to defend yourself at short notice.

When selecting a backpack, get the best your budget can afford. Look for one constructed out of lightweight nylon, (for strength, durability and water resistance) and has an aluminum frame. Having a frame will allow the pack to set more comfortably on your body even when heavily loaded and it also provides some structure to your pack. This helps to keep items from being crushed or containers bursting if you need to set your pack down. Look for one that features an exterior shelf on the frame for carrying a tent. This will allow you to roll up and carry your tent while it's still wet without significant problems.

Look for a backpack that has multiple compartments. Not only with this help you keep track of your supplies and facilitate easier packing and unpacking, but can help isolate messes. For example, if you have a bottle of water stored in the main compartment of your pack, and it leaks, the bulk of your supplies are now soaked. A serious inconvenience in a mild climate; a dangerous situation in a climate cold enough for water to freeze.

When selecting a pack, try on several different ones to find the one most comfortable for you. Try to focus your search on a pack that has wide, well-padded shoulder straps. This is the part of your body that bears the majority of the weight. After walking for an extended time, the straps will begin to dig into your shoulders. Wider straps distribute more of the weight, so will be less uncomfortable over time.

Some excellent packs can be sourced from REI.com, I have had good experience with their REI Mars 80 pack, which has lasted an exceptionally long time, is very durable, and easy to wear. A lot of people swear by the packs that have a metal frame, but it is important to make sure whatever pack you choose, that it suits your body type, and is a pack that you could comfortably wear for hours, if not days fully packed.

After you select your pack and take it home, assemble your likely supplies and pack and re-pack them. Not only to see how best to arrange your supplies in the most space-efficient manner possible, but also for the practice. You never know
