APPENDIX: DATA AND METHODS

Three sets of data constitute the bulk of the evidence examined here. One of these, available on the web, is a list of the state’s largest slaveholders in 1860 in each of twenty-seven of the state’s sixty counties. A second set is a comprehensive list of the graduates of the last five antebellum classes, from 1856 through 1860, inclusive, of the University of Mississippi. The third group of data is a comprehensive listing of each member of Mississippi’s House of Representatives and Senate during the last two years before the war, 1859 to 1861, and during the first two years following the war’s end, 1865 to 1867. None of these groups represents a statistical sample of some larger group; instead, each group contains all members of that group. For example, the group of recent university graduates includes every graduate of the University of Mississippi for the years 1856 through 1860, inclusive.
