Chapter Six

Reaching Across the Generational Divide

Most Gen 1 Fighters and many Gen 2 Dreamers never expected their country to give them a totally fair shake. Their aspirations, however high they might have soared, always had to be carefully calibrated to account for the possible exigencies of color. For Gen 3 Believers, the calculations are, in some respects, more nuanced and complex. They—at least the most privileged and well educated among them—have been primed for a world where color no longer matters even remotely the way it once did. So they are not always sure whether the lessons and experiences of their fathers have much relevance to their own lives. Their world, many seem to be concluding, operates under an altogether different set of rules. In this chapter, we meet some young people, along with their fathers, as they struggle to make sense of this new state of affairs.
