After Bundy departed the Chi Omega house, leaving two dead and two seriously injured behind, and the women began to awake to the tragedy that befell them, a sense of high anxiety and shock began to take hold. Not everyone came out of their rooms at the same time, and all who did were met with the police moving about, emergency medical technicians pushing gurneys, and crying and bewildered young women who’d been awakened to a nightmare and didn’t yet understand what had happened to them. What follows is from The Bundy Murders:

At 3:35 A.M. (only about thirteen minutes after the first responders arrived), Officer Henry Newkirk of the Tallahassee Police Department entered the foyer of Chi Omega and walked upstairs, where he found near-pandemonium on the part of the young residents of the sorority. Not only had they been awakened to the knowledge that an assault on two of their friends had just occurred, but the whisking away of an unresponsive Lisa Levy only heightened their fears. Correctly gauging the scene as an evidence-gathering nightmare, he quickly began rounding up the distraught and crying women and leading them into an empty room. His reason for doing so, he explained later, was “to quell some of the extraneous wandering and commotion.”

After getting the women settled into room 2, Newkirk had just begun questioning them as to what they may have seen or knew, when Chi O sister, Melanie Nelson, who was worried that Margaret Bowman had not come out of her room, asked Officer Newkirk to, look into room 9 to make sure Margaret Bowman was alright since she had not exited her room. Newkirk immediately turned on his heels and went into Bowman’s room. What follows is from Officer Newkirk’s official report: This writer entered room 9 and immediately closed the door behind me once I observed blood on a pillow. This was the second fatality to be discovered at Chi Omega.
