5.3 Method

The study combines a qualitative content analysis with a partial quantitative assessment of the overall frames in opinion items in Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Hayat, and Al-Ahram. The following three periods are examined in a bid to compare coverage of the War over time:

Period I: Commencement of War (July 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19).

Period II: Qana carnage by Israeli forces (July 31, August 1).

Period III: Declaration of a ceasefire (August 15, 16).

After reading the collected articles, six master frames, or recurring themes, were formulated and identified. The qualitative assessment of framing is founded on identification of the specific properties of the news narrative embodied in key words, concepts, metaphors, symbols, and visual images emphasized in opinion items.17
