FACING DOWN FEAR

Fear grows in the darkness; if you think there is a bogeyman around, turn on the light.

—DOROTHY THOMPSON

It is often said that we cannot transcend what we do not confront. Certainly when we avoid confronting fear then, as the Swedish proverb reminds us, “worry gives a small thing a big shadow.”1

Mariners once feared that if they sailed far enough out on the ocean they would fall over the edge of the earth, which was thought to be flat. Similarly, many modern-day people are gripped by fears concerning their personal development—an “unknown” that likewise exists only in the imagination. If mariners wishing to make voyages of discovery had not overcome their fear of the unknown, the nations of America, Canada, and Central and South America would not exist in their present state. By the same token, if contemporary people seeking more happiness in their lives refuse to leave their comfort zones they may never come to know their true potential. You cannot find a new harbor by never leaving the shore.

To face our fears about overcoming economic dependency, we must become self-responsible—prepared to deal with each financial situation we encounter. Self-responsibility is generated from within; like self-esteem, it cannot be received from the outside. Nathaniel Branden says it does not help that modern Western societies have endorsed social policies that discourage self-responsibility and encourage dependence. To pursue economic independence through the practice of self-responsibility, he notes, you must:

Be proactive rather than reactive

Manifest a high level of consciousness, focus, and purpose

Take responsibility for every choice, decision, and action without blaming or seeking an alibi

Be fully accountable for all promises and commitments made

Be clear on what is and what is not within your power

Be task and results focused rather than turf protecting

Be able to bounce back from defeat, setbacks, or adversity, and continue moving forward toward goals, rather than surrendering to despair

Demonstrate an unmistakable commitment to facing reality, regardless of whether it is pleasant or not.2
