THE PEOPLE LAW

It’s critical to know this about the working life of Doctors who own their own practice: Without people you don’t own a practice, you own a job. And it can be the worst job in the world because you’re working for a lunatic! (Nothing personal—we simply have to face the truth if we’re ever going to change things.)

Let me state what every Doctor knows: Without people, you’re going to have to do it all yourself. Without human help, you’re doomed to try to do too much. This isn’t a breakthrough idea, but it’s amazing how many ignore the truth. They end up knocking themselves out, 12 to 16 hours a day. They try to do more, but less actually gets done.

The load can double you over. Besides what you’re used to doing, you may also have to do the books. You’ll have to do the organizing. You’ll have to do the planning, the buying, the ordering, and the scheduling. And on and on until you’re a burned-out husk.

Like painting the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s endless. Which makes it beyond the realm of human possibility.

Of course, with others helping you, my Doctor friend, things will start to improve. But only if you truly understand how to engage people in the work you need them to do. When you learn how to do that, when you learn how to replace yourself with other people—people trained in your system—then your practice can really begin to grow. Only then will you begin to experience true freedom yourself.

Doctors often fail to understand that once they surround themselves with people, they’ve taken on a role other than Doctor. They are now Business Managers. It’s not a role most Doctors take seriously.

Typically, Doctors, knowing they need help answering the phone, filing, and so on, go out and find people who can do these things. Once they delegate these duties, however, they rarely spend any time with the hoi polloi. Deep down they feel it’s not important how these things get done; it’s only important that they get done.

They fail to grasp the requirement for a system that makes people their greatest asset rather than their greatest liability. A system so reliable that if Mary dropped dead tomorrow, Judy could do exactly what Mary did.

Here’s an important aspect of the People Law:

People allow you to be everywhere you want to be simultaneously, without actually having to be there physically!
