Chapter 16
Percy traipsed about her bedroom, which overlooked Green Park, and barely could wander her way through the stacks of presents, and boxes, and wreaths of fabric that had been put in it.
My goodness!
She was going to have to do a great deal of organizing. She could still hardly believe that she had taken up residence at such a glorious townhouse.
The wedding was in just a few hours' time, and the Duke of Drake had sent her more presents than most people could ever imagine receiving in a lifetime. She was going to have to tell him to simply stop such nonsense. She was not a child, and she did not need to be cosseted.
Still, it was nice that he was deciding to spend so much time thinking about her, for each present had not been generic. No.
Each present seemed to have been sought out specifically for her and for her tastes.
There were stacks and stacks of books, all beautifully printed.
Milton, A Lady, Fielding, and all the authors that she absolutely adored.
There was even a Complete Works of William Shakespeare, and it was the most beautiful thing that she had ever seen.
The pages were scrolled with gold and color, and beautiful illustrations. She'd spent hours touching and turning them, looking at each story one by one.
And then, of course, there were the various books on gardening, and various dresses and gowns that would be suitable for such endeavors.
Penelope bounced on the massive bed in the center of the room, her beautiful, long pink skirts, trailing over the goose down comforter. “I say, you're going to have a very grand life,” her cousin said brightly.
“I am,” Persephone said, rather stunned.
“You are going to be such a grand lady.” Penelope rolled onto her front and propped up her chin with her fists.
“Not lady,” Persephone pointed out.
“How true,” Penelope teased dramatically. “A duchess, my goodness! You will forget you ever knew me.”
Percy shook her head as she sat before her dressing room table. “How could I ever forget such a thing, Penelope? You've been my only friend. The only person who's ever really cared about me. Well, and your father.”
“And now you have a duke to care for you,” Penelope gently warned, tracing her hand over the counterpane.
But then, with all seriousness, she added, “I'm glad to hear you say it, though I know that you love me. I should hate to lose you. We have been like sisters.”
It was true.
Penelope was the closest thing Persephone'd ever had to a sister, and she was certainly the only true friend that she had.
And now, here in London, surrounded by the glittering people of the ton, Percy had a strong feeling she was going to feel more alone than ever.
It was a good thing that she had such a strong sense of self, but it would be wonderful to have Penelope near at hand.
The Duke of Drake had already agreed that it was perfectly acceptable for Penelope and her father to live with them or, at the very least, near them.
