Philip started from a troubled doze; his late wife’s recriminating voice intersected with Richard’s inebriated anger to form a mosaic of unpleasant dreams. Dreams in which the heavy mantle of loneliness dragged him down into despair.

The room was in shadows, as night had fallen since he had closed his eyes. Sconces threw light across the floor, and the fireplace shed flickering shadows across his face. A servant had entered and prepared the room while he slept.

He raised his head, his neck protesting too many hours cricked awkwardly against the chair arm. Groaning, he groped for the decanter on the side table and poured another drink without care. He heard the splash of escaping drops but did not have the will to raise his head and see to protecting the antique table from the damage the liquid would wreak. Raising the glass to his lips, he swallowed. He needed to drown the echoes of the past.
