About an hour later, when they had left the Kidron behind them and Jerusalem was no longer in view, Dositheus and his servant paused to rest. Bethany was less than an hour’s walk to the east; hopefully it would be less crowded than Jerusalem. Here, at least, the crowd thinned appreciably, though pilgrims still passed frequently. Some had begun to pitch tents alongside the road and on the gentle hill slopes as the sun declined toward the west.

Not far away, a man in a ragged gray cloak sat on a boulder and munched on a loaf of bread. Dositheus looked away as the man rose to his feet and began to advance with a lame gait. Another damned beggar! Wayfarers were plagued by them during holiday seasons, and most of them were frauds. He prepared a curt rebuff as the man drew near—but then was surprised to hear, instead of the typical importuning whines, a firm and youthful voice saying:
