Chapter Nine

A loud boom instantly woke Daniel. He sat upright and scanned the room. No one was there, but he heard some sort of roaring fire not that far away.

Fuck, fuck, fuck. Had someone attacked?

Jenny blinked up sleepily at him and he said, “Get dressed, Jenny, and be ready to run.”

His words banished the sleepiness from her gaze. “What?”

He jumped out of bed. “Just do as I say. There was an explosion and I need to see where. But if it was caused by the League, we’ll need to flee. Quickly.”

He’d threaded dominance into his voice, and it worked on her. She nodded. “Okay. Shout if you need me. But Daniel? Promise me you’ll be careful.”

It was strange having someone care so much about him—his friends and family did, of course, but it felt different coming from Jenny—and he nodded. “I will. Now, hurry and be ready.”

He hated leaving her behind, and especially alone. But there was only one window in the bedroom and he’d had bars installed on it years ago. It was the only way he could sleep if out in the open without the protection of his clan, like with this cabin.

It should help keep Jenny safe now, too.

His dragon spoke up. I don’t hear anyone inside the house. But the fire is close.

Yes, and I wonder how the hell they managed it in the waist-high snow.

When hate is involved, anything could happen.

His dragon fell silent, knowing Daniel needed to concentrate without distractions. A quick sweep of the house revealed nothing out of the ordinary. Since he’d tugged on some clothes while doing the sweep, he quickly donned his boots and coat and peeked out the window near the door.

The light was faint, the sun already setting at this time of year. However, in the distance, an orange glow signaled some kind of huge inferno.

No doubt his clan had heard it, but he dialed his boss on the satellite phone. The head Protector, Axel, picked up on the first ring. “Is it near you?”

“Yes, it’s not far from here. I’m on my way to investigate. But I’m going to need help transporting the human here with me to safety.”

Since he’d shared helping her in a report earlier, his boss didn’t ask questions. Instead, Axel grunted. “The snow is too deep to send any kind of vehicle. Not even the snowmobiles will work in the darkness, at least not with a fragile human. We’ll have to retrieve her by dragonwing. Are you sure we can trust her?”

Because if a human reported to ADDA about them carrying her to their clan, it could land his clan in a hell of a lot of trouble.

But he knew Jenny wouldn’t betray him like that. “Yes, we can. Although she might need someone there to calm her on the ride. It can’t be me because I know this area the best and need to be on hand.”

“I’ll send Solana.”

Solana was his boss’s mate. She was only half-human, but that still might help when it came to explaining things to Jenny.
