23 THE VENN DIAGRAM
• Venn Diagrams were studied in detail by John Venn in 1880, although he called them Euler diagrams after Leonhard Euler who looked at them a century before.
• This is a highly flexible system of interlocking circles that are useful for identifying the contrast between overlapping qualities or areas of uniqueness.
• The minimum number of circles is two, and the maximum for most uses is three. (Highly advanced set theorists have gone as far as 16 intersections, but this is too complex for business purposes.)
• Once the circles are interlocked, totally discrete areas are revealed (in which there is no overlap). These can then be compared with the qualities of the overlap areas.
• Where three circles are used, the central area will show multiple overlapping characteristics.
• The volume of areas revealed should ideally be kept approximately proportional to their percentage of overlap so that the extent of the common ground is visually representative.
Exercise: Choose two subjects with related but not identical properties. Arrange two circles to overlap in a proportion that accurately represents their degree of common ground. Also look at the discrete areas where there is no overlap. Make decisions based on the benefits of either common ground or uniqueness.
